P.E. Horine from Glance Back in Time Preston Ellsworth who was born October 31, 1868 west of Purdy, near the old Fly homestead and attended school at Cassville, Corsicana, Central School in the home district at Swindle College and finished at Exeter, all in Barry County, as was one of the local educators, teaching school at Mt. Onte, in McDonald County, at Central School, Barry County. He married on January 24, 1891 to Emma Blankenship, who was born December 3, 1872, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Blankenship of Corsicana, Missouri. (May 25, 1893 Cassville Republican) P. E. Horine will occupy one room of the new building now being erected by himself and W. B. Robbins with a stock of furniture. In 1893 he lost his store by fire. Preston and Emma moved to the old Blankenship homestead, did farming and was manager of the Corsicana Woolen Mill. In 1896, Preston Horine will open his clover and orchard grass pasture May 1st and will be prepared to care for horses and mules at $1.25 per head, except mares with young colts, for which the charge will be $1.50 per month. After two years the family returned to Cassville. In January 1897 Preston purchased the furniture stock of Hutchens & Martin and moved back to Cassville with his family. March 1897 he completed erecting a brick block on the South side of the square, next to Robbins Barber Shop and moved his stock of furniture to the Horine Block. P. E. would go to St. Louis, Missouri to purchase furniture. 1899, P. E. had a wood house built for his family. In 1901 he added a deck the full length of the room he built on the east side of his furniture store. |

During the time Preston Horine was in the furniture business and he was owner of one of the earlier funeral service business. 1918 Preston ran for the office of County Collector and was elected. He was also a Cashier of Barry County Bank of Cassville. In 1923 he returned to his old business of furniture and funeral service until July 1931, when half interest was sold to George E. Culver. Then the firm was known as Horine Culver's Furniture and Funeral Service until January 1, 1938. The furniture that was part of the business was transferred to Woolford Dale Nicoll and from that time on Mr. Horine and Mr. Culver operated the funeral home known as Horine-Culver Funeral Home. Preston Ellsworth Horine passed away November 23, 1942. Mr. Culver succeeded to the Horine interest and he continued to operate the Culver Funeral Home until hiS death In 1971. Then the business was continued by his daughter and son-in-law, Paul and Margaret Henbest, who later sold the funeral home to Axley, who then sold it to Jim and Janice Fohn. Mr. Preston Horine was buried in the Cassville Cemetery. His Wife, Emma (Blankenship) Horine passed away August 5, 1962 and is buried with her husband. |
